Brief Author Biography

I, Marie Waldrep, was born in Georgia. I lived with both parents. I have 2 brothers and 3 sisters & I am the youngest of six children. 

I am a survivor of incest and childhood sexual assault who expresses her feelings and healing journey through poetry & in other positive forms of expression.

I began writing from my heart at the early age of 11. Due to my personal experience with incest and childhood sexual assault, I found writing poems helped to ease the pain and facilitate my healing and recovery process. As such, I felt compelled to write my book of poems, called "A Voice That Has Spoken From Within: A Survivor's Feelings Expressed Through Poetry."

I was awarded Editor's Choice Award in January 2004 for outstanding achievement in poetry by poetry.com and the International Library of Poetry for my poem "Still I Cry."

I have created a web site called The Mighty Phoenix with information to help promote awareness and healing of all sexual abuse, which also tells part of my personal story of survival. I moved away from the reminders of my abuse in 2006.

My wish is that my poems would be an inspiration to all who read them and that other victims/survivors would find the courage to begin his or her own healing process. I want others to know they are not alone in the feelings they have had from being a victim, and that they can now work on healing as a survivor.
